Ask The Designer: Before You Renovate
We get asked these on every first call. Here's what we actually say:
How much is my renovation going to cost?
Honestly, we can't tell you until we design it. Most people don't know the full scope of what they want yet. We meet you on site, do our research and preliminary drawings, and then give you a real preliminary cost. For a ballpark, a primary bathroom typically runs $100,000 to $150,000.
How do I figure out my budget?
Start with a wish list. Write down everything you want done, now and in the next two to five years. In a renovation, it never makes sense to do things twice. Give us the list and we'll come back with an itemized budget, then work out what makes sense now and what can wait.
Do I already need to have a contractor?
No. D2 Interieurs is a full-service design-build firm. Whatever the scope, we have the professionals in-house and on our team, from architects to contractors to builders and everything in between.
How long will it take, and when can you start?
We don't start a renovation until everything is in place: the team, the detailed drawings, permits when they're needed, and every building material ordered and on site. That's what keeps a project moving as quickly as possible, and it saves you both time and money.
How involved do I need to be?
Not very. Depending on the size of the project, we'll keep you updated once work begins, but we really take care of everything.
Do I need a Pinterest board and a clear vision first?
It helps, but that's our job. What people think they want at the start is just the beginning. I always hear "I never knew that existed" or "I never knew we could do that." Bring your board and we'll build your dream home from there.
Should I design for how I live now, or for resale?
It depends on when you're selling. Moving in the next two to five years? Think about resale. Staying ten years or more? Design it for how you live now. It's your home.
Do you take on one-room projects?
We do. Scope and budget are a factor, so let's talk about yours.
How do you make small or awkward spaces work?
Small and awkward spaces are some of our favorite things to design. Our most creative solutions come from working around what's already there.
What's the biggest mistake homeowners make?
Not having a plan. You need a fully baked plan with a budget, a timeline, and a professional to carry it out.
